Test Drive: The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E Gt Aims To Be An Electric Muscle Suv
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E looks nothing like Ford’s iconic pony car of the past. Ford calls the Mustang Mach-E a crossover vehicle, but with 5.1 to 5.8 inches of ground clearance and a steep roofline, I’d beg to differ. However, the Mach-E is long and capable of being a sports car, and has the personality to be mistaken for a utility vehicle. In my opinion, the Mach-E is a superb tourer similar to the discontinued and largely forgotten BMW 3 Series and 5 Series GT models.
Whatever you call it, the Mustang Mach-E arrives in 2021. Later that year, Ford added a performance-oriented GT version. Since then, the automaker has been regularly updating the EV.
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes in Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT trim levels. Base prices range from the mid $40,000,000s to the $60,000,000s, including delivery from the factory in Cuititlan, Mexico to your local dealer. According to Ford, the Mach-E qualifies for a $3,750 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act.
I reviewed the 2022 Mach-E Premium and was very impressed. For this Mach-E review, I drove the GT in Southern California. It came with optional cyber-orange paint, a Ford Mobile electric cord and a hands-free self-driving system, bringing the retail price to $65,190 at the time of this writer’s writing, including $1,800. You can easily see the difference between the Mach-E GT and other versions of the EV. GTs feature a black “brake” panel with illuminated pony emblems, a revised fascia with a lower split, red brake calipers and GT badges. In addition, the GT gets a 20-inch, five-spoke, aerodynamic wheel design, and the GT Performance Edition has multi-spoke wheels with machined surfaces.
The Mach-E trades in signature Mustang styling. The approach wasn’t popular with some, but Ford is smart to use this tactic, which may help first-time EV buyers feel more comfortable with the Mach-E’s familiar name and look. The design elements work well on the EV and instantly identify it as a member of the Mustang family.
The Mach-E does not have traditional door handles. Instead, E-Latch doors recognize the presence of a key or respond to Phone A technology, enabled with the Ford Pass smartphone app. The Mach-E also features Ford’s Secure Code technology, which allows you to enter a personal identification number code that you can access via a touch panel embedded in the door frame trim.
Inside the GT, the 2023’s standard panoramic glass sunroof makes it comfortable. The heated front seats offer eight-way power adjustment, and the upholstery is a mix of Ford’s ActiveX leatherette and imitation suede. Copper contrast stitching is visible throughout the cabin.

Finding the right driving position in the Mach-E GT is easy, and the driver’s seat is comfortable on long drives. A versatile center console separates the front seats, offering a mix of open and covered storage, making the Mach-E the first modern Mustang with plenty of space for long road trips.
The driver and front passenger face a sophisticated dashboard with a traditional Mustang-style two-cow design. Ford integrates the air vents on the dividing line between the top and bottom of the range, and the door panels have leather and fabric upper trim. A slim yet spacious digital instrument display sits behind the steering wheel, and is in keeping with the design and aesthetics of the cabin. Ford uses a rectangular 15.5-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard mounted in portrait orientation, and it doesn’t look like a big-screen TV hanging on an art gallery wall.
The Mach-E is the first passenger-friendly Mustang in history. If there are three people on the bench, two will be happier. The EV is still connected. After all, rear-seat passengers sit high with good visibility, and the panoramic glass roof gives the cabin an airy feel.
At the rear, a standard liftgate opens to reveal the Mach-E GT’s cargo area. It has 29.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 59.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Additionally, the Mach-E has a small trunk in front that holds 4.7 cubic feet of gear. The sponge is water-resistant and equipped with a drainage net, making it easy to clean.

In addition to the 10.2-inch digital instrument display, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has a 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system display mounted on the dash in portrait orientation. It is thoughtfully designed and includes all the important settings and controls, including the climate system. Ford includes a physical dial below the screen, which controls stereo power and volume.
The Sync 4A system includes Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, enhanced voice recognition, three complimentary years of service and connected navigation with predictive direction suggestions. Over-the-year updates, called Ford PowerUp, keep the system up to date.
In addition, Mach-E includes FordPass Connect services and an associated smartphone app. The most important ones are 4G LTE Wi-Fi network access, phone as main technology, charging location finding and payment feature, navigation route with charging station. The Mach-E GT also features standard wireless smartphone charging, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system and a camera system.
It may sound subtle, but the information system is easy to use. After driving the Mach-E for a week, I wished it had a radio tuning tube. Voice recognition and the Bang & Olufsen sound system are also excellent.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach E Gt Now Runs From Zero To 60 Mph In 3.3 Seconds But There’s A Catch
Every 2023 Mustang Mach-E comes with Ford Co-Pilot360, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems that include standard safety features. In addition, the EV has Ford Co-Pilot Assist 2.0, which adds stop-and-go capability, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, cross-traffic assist and adaptive cruise control with speed detection.
The big news for 2023 is standard BlueCruise 1.2 hands-free driving technology. Ford includes a 90-day trial subscription to the feature, after which you can pay for up to three years of access. Blue Cruise combines adaptive cruise control with lane-departure center assist and hands-free driving on 130,000 miles of North American highways, which Ford calls the Hands-Free Blue Zone. Version 1.2 of the technology adds Hands-Free Lane Change Assist, which can automatically keep the Mach-E in a lane to give larger vehicles a wider lane, streamlining overall system performance. .
For the final test of this new version of the Blue Cruiser, I headed out of the city to the West Los Angeles area and quickly learned that the Mustang Mach-E needed a head-up display. Blue Cruise system readiness and status messages are visible only on the slim 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Sometimes, an audible warning accompanies them, but not always. Also, some messages appear briefly, so if you’re not looking at the display, you’ll miss them. You also rely on the screen to know when Blue Cruise is active, unlike Super Cruise-equipped General Motors, which have a green indicator light on the steering wheel.
During our morning drive, the blue cruise was impressive, if not overwhelming. For example, while driving through Calabasas Hills, the system asked me to take control for no reason. Shortly after, as the Mach-E entered the rising sun, Blue Cruise immediately asked to take control and idled until merging onto the southbound 405 Freeway. Presumably this was due to direct sunlight before Mach-E. However, climbing up the 405 and pointing its pony-adorned nose at the sun, the Blue Cruise gave me a “ready” status message for a long time before activating the system.

Overall, I find Blue Cruise effective in the right conditions. However, the most recent iteration of the SuperCruise-equipped Cadillac CT5-V made me partially prefer the General Motors technology.
