Engine, Performance & MPG

All four trim levels of the BMW 5-Series use a 255 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and rear or all-wheel drive. The 540i comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 375-hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. Both are powered by a 48-volt hybrid system. The plug-in hybrid 550e is powered by an inline-six and an electric motor that produces 483 horsepower; all-wheel drive is standard. In our test drive with a 530i, the ride is smooth while still delivering a sensation of modest athleticism. The cornering grip is acceptable, especially with the M Sport package’s improved suspension. Speaking of the M Sport package, it also has improved brakes, resulting in a remarkable 156-foot stop from 70 mph on our test course.

What About Fuel Economy and MPG? We estimate that the four-cylinder 530i will get 27 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, while the 540i will get 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Estimates for the plug-in hybrid 550e have not yet been provided. In a 75 mph highway fuel efficiency test, the 530i xDrive averaged 35 mpg.
