It’s been quite a busy week in the world of electric trucks. Post detailed information on everything we know about the Tesla truck and the Rivian R1T. In addition, some other tracking highlights are reported.

Rivian R1t Yearlong Review: Tales Of Towing With An Electric Truck

Over time, mostly through Tesla CEO Elon Musk, we’ve learned more and more details about the Tesla truck, so we thought it was time to highlight everything we know about Tesla’s pickup.

The pieces of the Rivian R1T truck puzzle are mostly in place now, so let’s take a look at what is known.

When it was unveiled at the LA Auto Show in late 2018, Rivian burst onto the scene with its R1T. From theft to mainstream happened literally overnight. Since then, we’ve learned more and more about this sleek electric pickup truck, so hit the link for important details on the R1T.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett talks to Rivian about the automaker’s tie-up and says an electric pickup truck isn’t likely, but a large electric SUV could be in the works.

Lessons Learned From 5 Days Driving A Rivian — 60 Minute Cfo

It was back in April of this year when Ford announced a $500 million investment in electric adventure vehicle maker Raven. At the time, details were scarce, but we speculated that the resulting vehicle would be a large electric SUV. Now, it seems Ford’s CEO agrees. Read the details here.

Watch how this Tesla Model 3 almost turns into a diesel Ram pickup truck fueled by coal from a heater. The Smart Model 3 driver (in the ultra performance version of the Model 3) avoids a lot of dirt and grime by slamming the go pedal and flying. Watch the video here.

Check out this reckless Ram truck driver near the end of his Tesla. Then, the truck swerves onto the shoulder over a solid yellow line briefly to check the brakes after the Tesla pulls too close to the electric car. Two years after driving it with the Motor Authority Best Car 2022 award, the Rivian R1T still amazes me.

The most versatile vehicle on sale has been improved over time, with updated software and an easy-to-use information-rich interface, while continuing to deliver plenty of power and the most innovative packaging of any vehicle for the money and Rivian has added more Choices in additional battery pack sizes and motor configurations.

This Rivian R1t Is Ready For The Last Day On Earth

But there is room for improvement in smartphone integration; There is no locking differential on dual-engine models; And a handful of the discomfort of use in everyday situations can be improved.

Here are the pros and cons of the 2024 Rivian R1T Dual-Motor Performance Max Pack after spending a week reviewing our award winner in its current form.

The quad-motor R1T that the automaker debuted with is unnecessarily quick with 835 hp and the ability to hit 0-60 mph. In 3.0 seconds flat. I decide I don’t want to pay today’s $8,000 upcharge for a 4-motor setup provided by Bosch, but the new in-house designed and built Rivian 2-motor setup is more than adequate. With its 533 hp, the Rivian claims a 0-60 mph sprint of 4.5 seconds. My tester was the Performance Dual Motor model, which costs $5,000 more with software tweaks for the 2-motor powertrain, 665 hp and a 0-60 mph sprint of 3.5 seconds. That’s half a second off the 4-engine model, and it’s more efficient to boot. Real-world acceleration from 0-60 mph is 3.5 seconds for a vehicle that weighs 7,000 pounds. It is still rated at 11,000 pounds and saves money. It can also be optioned with my tester’s larger 141-kWh (usable) battery pack, while the 4-motor trucks can only be had with the larger 131-kWh battery.

In an unusual packaging decision Rivian chose not to pack the front or rear of the mechanical locking differentials on the dual motor R1T. Quad-motor models do not need locks because each wheel gets its own electric motor, but 2-motor models rely on a redundant brake-based setup. The system relies on software to apply the brakes to control power distribution and maintain forward momentum in slippery and off-road conditions. For tough off-roading, this makes the quad-motor model more appealing than the dual-motor models. The Tesla CyberTruck includes various locking features, but the unfinished truck currently sold to customers has the hardware but not the software to actually engage the lockers.

At $136,991, Will You Overpay For This 520 Mile Rivian R1t Launch Edition?

Rivian has expanded the R1T offering to include three drive systems and now includes four battery pack sizes: the Basic Standard at 106 kwh, the $3,100 Standard+ at 121 kwh, the $9,100 Large at 131 kwh, and my tester’s $19,100 at Max 14pack. With all kWh packs having the same battery chemistry and the previously announced LFP battery not yet arriving, build options have become complicated and confusing. The sizes of the battery packs start to feel like dividers.

The Performance Dual Motor powertrain is not optional with the standard pack tested, but can be optioned with the other three for respective ranges of 315 miles, 352 miles and 410 miles. It seems like it should just be the standard powertrain, it’s software only and it has a sport mode.

It’s great that the Rivian gives buyers an EPA-estimated 410 miles, but the value is questionable for a max pack for anyone who doesn’t live in extreme cold, on long road trips or towing. Bigger packs mean heavier trucks that carry extra batteries all the time.

The best advice here is to buy what you need, and understand the wheel and tire configurations. While 21-inch wheels with street tires come standard, available 22-inch street tires or 20-inch all-terrain tires will reduce the range. My tester was optioned with the $3,850 all-terrain package that added 20-inch wheels, Pirelli all-terrain tires, underbody protection, and a matching spare tire, which was missing from my tester; It reached an EPA-estimated 355 miles. The Rivian averaged 1.9 mpg (according to the truck) in cooler temperatures, which dipped into the low 20s at night and broke around 40 degrees during the day.

Rivian R1t, The Electrek Review: There Is Nothing Like It

Since Rivian launched the R1T, it has removed several pages from the truck’s 15.6-inch touchscreen that dominates the dashboard. The Drive Mode screen can now be swiped to the left and the screen is filled with data including specific engine temperature, battery pack temperature, individual tire pressure, steering angle, altitude, compass, trip computer and trailer setting. It does all this while maintaining quick and immediate access to climate control settings, and it can be split-screen with whatever information is displayed while displaying audio information and key vehicle controls. Almost every automaker outside of Tesla should take note and copy Raven’s lessons here. It pays to design your own software at home.

The R1T doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and to be honest I don’t really miss the one implemented on mine, CarPlay. The infotainment system is very good. Rivian has made it so you can click the share button in Apple Maps on an iPhone and share a destination with a vehicle. Fat but not all aspects feel quite the same as they could. The vehicle downloaded my phone contacts, including addresses, and while I can pull up a contact in my phone book on the Ravine’s touchscreen and tap the address for navigation purposes, I can’t use voice commands to do the same. Of the system relies heavily on Alexa, which my contacts do not have. That is, I can upload my contacts to Alexa separately, but who wants to do that? Tesla integrated a native Apple Music app, and the Raven should too. Rivian has already said that it is working on a solution to answer and send text messages with a phone by voice command, but has not explained how, yet. Maybe Siri integration is coming, and will solve a lot of these problems.

Two years after hitting the market and six years after being unveiled, the R1T has features that no other product on the planet carries. The 11.0 cubic foot trunk has a false floor and can be expanded or hidden in two layers. The 4.5-foot bed has under-bed storage that is sealed with gaskets. The storage is large enough to hold a full-size spare, something the Cybertruck can’t do. It has a lot of open space inside the cab, with space on the center floor in front for a bag, purse or computer bag where a traditional center console can be, and storage under the front and rear seats. But the most innovative bit is the waterproof 11.6-cubic-foot gear tunnel, which can hide things from prying eyes. It is rated to lift up to 300 pounds. Bonus: Gang tunnel doors can be used as a gang, to lace up or click, or the like
